Filename etiquette and guidelines

College users may find it useful to read over the information on our web page concerning filename etiquette and guidelines.  A consistent approach to naming your data files can be a great step towards avoiding frustration and saving time in subsequently locating those files.

Note that the advice provided regarding the naming of your data files does not constitute an official College policy, rather we recommend that each local area agree on their own specific procedures after taking this information on board.

A related item that all members of College should be aware of, regarding the content of your documents and how to improve accessibility, is the College’s Clear Print Guidelines, an appendix of the Accessible Information Policy.

Photographic Centre relocation

Photocentre montageThe Photographic Centre has been relocated to room 2051 in the Arts Building.  This room is on the Arts concourse opposite the Ui Cadhain lecture theatre.

Users of the service will be glad to note that there is no change to the services provided, as outlined on the Photographic Centre website.

Improvements to Helpdesk remote assistance software

ISS Remote AssistanceIS Services are pleased to announce the upcoming introduction of an improved solution for providing remote assistance to College users who contact the Helpdesk via phone.  The new software now allows Helpdesk staff to connect remotely to any computer with internet access, not just those connected to the College network.  Additionally, Helpdesk staff can now take remote control of Apple Mac computers, helping to provide a much quicker resolution to most technical support queries for users of such devices.

As part of the improvements users of Windows PCs connected to the College network should note that the ‘IS Services Remote Assistance’ shortcut on the desktop, as shown above, will be automatically updated to operate with the new service.  The new service will be fully live from Monday 10th October.
