Release of Windows 10 – support statement

Windows 10 is being released by Microsoft on July 29th 2015 and IS Services are preparing to test this operating system in regard to its compatibility with the Trinity data network and IT systems.  For this reason Windows 10 is not currently supported by IS Services for use on the Trinity data network, either in offices and labs or on the TCDconnect service.

For those with personally-owned computers, Microsoft are allowing one year from the release date for people who are running certain versions of Windows to take advantage of their free Windows 10 upgrade offer.  Our recommendation is not to upgrade to Windows 10 for the present time.

IS Services will provide status updates our Windows support statement web page regarding the progress of our testing with Windows 10, and we will also publish details to this blog.

Digital Capabilities Survey results

In April 2015 IS Services launched a Digital Capabilities Survey for University staff. Digital capabilities are defined as those that prepare us for living, learning and working in a digital society and include the ability to use digital tools to:

• undertake research, teaching, learning and administration;
• use specialist tools and data sets;
• communicate ideas effectively;
• produce, share and critically evaluate information;
• collaborate, reflect and promote knowledge.
The complete results are available on our website –

The Digital Capabilities Survey report includes some of the following results:
• Staff who answered the survey thought digital capabilities were very important to supporting the delivery of almost all of the College strategies and ranked digital capabilities as of most importance in supporting the Information Technology strategy, Teaching and Learning and Online strategies.
• Almost 90% of staff use a smartphone and just over 55% use a tablet, with the majority using Apple devices.
• IS Services, Administration and the Library were the three main areas in College you thought could positively affect change in College’s digital capabilities.
• The 3 things identified as those you would like to see developed to improve the Digital Capabilities of the College were improved access and service availability for:
o College Wi-Fi Network
o IT Training
o IT Support
As always, the feedback is much appreciated and we wish to thank all who took time to participate in this year’s survey.

Installing Windows updates

To help keep your data and the data network secure, Windows updates are automatically deployed each month to any Windows computer connected to the main data network in offices and labs across Trinity.

There will be a change in what you see when Windows updates are deployed to your computer.  This change will allow you to choose when the updates are installed, up to a deadline date, helping you avoid your computer restarting at an inconvenient time.

Full details of what to expect when Windows updates are made available to your PC can be seen on our Software Security Updates web page.  If you have any queries relating to this please contact the IS Services Helpdesk.

Helpdesk Opening Hours – Change in Hours for Tuesday, 14 July 2015

On Tuesday, 14 July, the Helpdesk Telephone, Email, Web and Walk-in Services will be available from 9.15am to, the usual close time, 5.30pm.  The delayed opening time on this day is due the requirement for a visit from pest control who will be spraying an infestation of carpet moths in our building.  We apologise for any inconvenience this change in opening time may cause.
