Mac OS 10.10 (Yosemite) now supported on TCDconnect service

We’re glad to announce that Mac OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) is now supported on the TCDconnect service for students.  Since the release of Yosemite in late October, IS Services have evaluated and tested this new operating system to ensure it is compatible with College IT infrastructure and systems for those using the TCDconnect service.

Some Wi-Fi issues have been noted worldwide by those who have upgraded to Yosemite.  Apple have released an update (version 10.10.1) to resolve some of these issues, and so we recommend that if you are using Yosemite you run the Apple Software Update to install the latest update.

If you are using this operating system and experience any issues registering for the TCDconnect service or using College IT systems, please contact the IS Services Helpdesk.

Staff and postgraduates should note that Yosemite is still being evaluated and tested for those connected to the wired network in College offices and labs or to the staff Wi-Fi service.

McAfee home versions support now available for TCDconnect service

We are happy to announce that we have added the following home versions of McAfee Anti-Virus software to our list of supported anti-virus software for the TCDconnect service:

  • McAfee Antivirus
  • McAfee Antivirus Plus 2013*
  • McAfee Home
  • McAfee Internet Security
  • McAfee LiveSafe 2013*
  • McAfee Security Center 2013*
  • McAfee Total Protection 2013*

*McAfee have just released the 2014/2015 versions of Anitivirus Plus, LiveSafe, Security Center and Total Protection. These latest versions are not yet supported on the TCDconnect service. Support will be added as soon as it becomes available from our suppliers. Microsoft Security Essentials is provided as a download during registration as an alternative until support for these new versions is available.

TCDconnect – End of support for Windows XP, Mac OS 10.5 & WPA1, 1st July

We’d like to remind students using the TCDconnect service of some upcoming changes in the requirements for using the service.  To retain a high level of security for everyone using the service it is necessary to remove support for operating systems and technologies that could be a security risk.

Software security updates are no longer provided for Windows XP or for Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard) and so, from 1st July 2014, it will not be possible to connect to the TCDconnect service from computers running these operating systems.   Since the start of the year we have been in regular contact with students who had registered such devices this year to inform them of this change.

Another change affecting a small number of people using the TCDconnect service is that support for a Wi-Fi security protocol called WPA1 will also be removed on 1st July.  The vast majority of Wi-Fi devices support the WPA2 protocol and our instructions for connecting to the TCDconnect service have advised the use of WPA2 since the start of this academic year.

If you have any questions relating to these developments please contact the IS Services Helpdesk.

Whatsapp, Viber, Google Hangouts

We are pleased to announce that students can now use Whatsapp, Viber and Google Hangouts on the TCDconnect service.

Guest Wi-Fi service upgrade

At the start of May 2014, we introduced an application upgrade to the Guest Wi-Fi service which purges expired accounts from the system which improves performance for creating new accounts.

TCDconnect service upgrade

IS Services are happy to announce that the planned upgrade of the TCDconnect service has been completed successfully.  The upgraded service is now fully operational and we thank everyone for their cooperation and understanding during the brief interruptions to the service that were required to carry out the upgrade work this week.

The growth in students bringing their own devices into College has risen dramatically over the last number of years.  In the current Academic Year we recorded the highest usage ever with approximately 12,000 students connecting over 18,500 desktops, laptops and mobile devices to the TCDconnect service.

With this upgrade College now have a service that can continue to meet the growing demand into the future and allow the rollout of new features that were not available in the older version of the software, such as:

  • Support for a wider variety of mobile devices, such as Windows RT, adding to the existing support for iOS and Android
  • A new ‘remote registration’ feature that we hope to offer in the coming months.  This will provide students with the ability to register their device with the TCDconnect service before arriving on campus.

Removal of ‘Keep Alive’ page for students in residences

As part of service improvement works a change was made in recent weeks to speed up the process of accessing external internet resources for for those students connected to the wired network in residences.  For such students it is now no longer necessary to use the ‘keep-alive’ web page in order to gain external internet access.  Instead the authentication details used to connect to the TCDconnect service are sufficient.
