Mobility Project update

The increase in the use of mobile devices in recent years, coupled with new data-intensive styles of teaching and learning, are all driving the demand for better campus Wi-Fi.

Since March of this year IT Services, as part of the Mobility Project, has been upgrading the existing Trinity Wi-Fi service with an enhanced and expanded service, designed to meet the needs of students, staff, guests and public visitors into the future.

We are glad to report that the Mobility Project will be completed on time on 30th November 2015.  On completion the upgraded Wi-Fi service will run on the latest technology available and will be one of the largest Wi-Fi networks in the country in terms of size, complexity, density and speed.

For staff and students this will result in expanded and better-quality Wi-Fi service, meeting the increasing need for access to information and knowledge at all times.

In the early stage of the project a full redesign of Wi-Fi coverage across all College working spaces was completed.  To deliver on this design over 2,000 high-speed and high-capacity Wi-Fi access points are being installed across Trinity, and this work is now over 75% complete.

Some of the work required to deliver the items above has required physical access to all locations at the different stages of the project.  IT Services greatly appreciates the cooperation of staff and students regarding the need for multiple on-site visits and any inconvenience caused.  To complete the work further site visits will be required.

The large scale improvements being delivered as part of the Mobility Project will require tuning and refining of the Wi-Fi network in some locations following upgrade works.  Details of locations which we already know require this tuning and refining are listed on our service alerts.

Support for Mac OS X El Capitan (OS X 10.11)

Mac OS X El Capitan (OS X 10.11) will be released by Apple on Wednesday, 30th September 2015 and IT Services will then begin testing this operating system in regard to its compatibility with the Trinity data network and IT systems.  Until this testing is complete we will not be able to provide support for Mac OS X El Capitan for use on the Trinity data network, either in offices and labs or on the student TCDconnect service.

With the above in mind we advise against upgrading to Mac OS X El Capitan until our testing is complete and any possible issues have been identified.

IT Service Desk statistics & top-20 issues for 2014-15

From the beginning of September 2014 to the end of August 2015 the IT Service Desk handled over 41,000 queries from Trinity staff and students.  This represents a reduction of 6% in total queries from the previous academic year.  A full breakdown of the figures can be seen on our IT Service Desk Statistics page.

As we start a new Academic Year IT Services would like to point out some items regarding the IT at Trinity that you might find useful.

From the start of this new Academic Year our department name has changed to ‘IT Services’ and our Helpdesk is now the ‘IT Service Desk’. If you are new to Trinity, or need a reminder on how to use some of the central IT services, then please visit the Getting Started section of our site. There are instructions and videos here outlining how to get started with your username and password, your Trinity email account, getting your device connected and more.

As always, it is our priority to keep you safe online. You may find it worthwhile to read through the Keeping IT Secure section of our website for practical tips on how to protect yourself from IT security threats. In particular we’d ask you to keep a close eye out for ‘phishing’ emails that ask you to ‘update,’ ‘validate,’ or ‘confirm’ your computer account information.

New for 2015/2016

From Fresher’s Week we are pleased to announce that all current students will have access to the Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus suite of software, free of charge. This includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote and also OneDrive which provides students with 1 Terabyte of online file storage. The Trinity ID app is another new service available to Trinity students. This app gives you a digital version of your Trinity ID card and can be used for identification with a select group of services in Trinity. The Trinity ID app is complementary to your Trinity ID card and has been developed as a collaboration between the Students Union, School of Computer Science & Statistics and IT Services.

Research IT walk-in workshop – Friday 4th September 11.00am-12.00pm

The IT Services Research IT group will hold an open drop-in session from 11am to 12pm in Room 2.12 Lloyd Building on Friday, 4th September.

Research IT provides Trinity researchers from all disciplines with the following services:
