Windows 10 now supported on the student TCDconnect service

We have completed testing Windows 10 on the student TCDconnect service and it is now possible to register devices running Windows 10, meaning students can connect such devices to the student Wi-Fi or wired networks.

To connect your Windows 10 device to TCDconnect you will need to have the latest security updates and a supported antivirus application, such as Windows Defender which comes already installed on Windows 10. When you are registering your device you will be provided with steps to update Windows if necessary. If you need any assistance with the process you can book into a Network Clinic. Please see our TCDconnect web pages for more information.

Devices running Windows 10 cannot yet be connected to the staff Wi-Fi network or the wired data network in Trinity offices and labs.  We are currently testing this new operating system for compatibility with our business applications, systems and networks and to ensure it will meet our IT security standards.

IS Services – We are Changing

Information Systems Services are re-structuring and as part of this we are changing our department name.  The restructuring, as recommended by the START (Supports in Trinity Administrative Review and Transformation) Programme, is to allow us to realise our potential to deliver more timely, effective, efficient and supportive services to the Trinity community.

From the beginning of the new 2015-16 academic year the department name will be ‘IT Services’ and our Helpdesk will also be changing and will be known as the ‘IT Service Desk’.  Over the coming weeks you will start to see our new name reflected in our communications and at our new website address www.tcd.ie/itservices.

During this transition period our contact details will remain the same, as outlined at https://www.tcd.ie/itservices/general/contact.php.

We will keep you informed as we progress through this change.

Replacement of Windows 2003 Servers

Within IT Services, particularly within our Management Services area, the primary focus over the last few months has been the migration of many services f to new environments as Windows 2003 was de-supported by Microsoft.

This project involved not only migrating and upgrading many applications, it also involved an Oracle Database upgrade and the re-write and streamlining of many complex interfaces between services. Below is some detail on the work that has been done to date:

1. Applications that service the following areas have been migrated and upgraded
Student Health Centre (Helix Health)
Counselling (Titanium)
School of Nursing (Arc system)

2. TCD Local Portal applications
The migration of functionality from the Oracle based Windows 2003 environment to a new Oracle based Windows 2012 environment was completed on Tuesday (28th July). This work is the culmination of the implementation of Oracle 12C and a new Oracle based TCD Local portal environment – Oracle Web Logic. Following the environment upgrade to ensure services could continue to operate the applications listed below were also upgraded:

Research Support System (RSS)
Telephone Billing
Telephone Directory
Asset Register
Travel Insurance form
FTSE system
Student Archive

The go-live of all of the above applications was coordinated carefully as the project could not accommodate their migration in a piecemeal manner. The legacy servers will be retired over the next few weeks.

3. Systems Interfaces
Alongside the above upgrades and migrations, a number of key systems interfaces were re-designed and consolidated in order to obtain efficiencies in their deployment and ongoing maintenance. The staging of the interfaces was designed such that the data therein can be used by as many downstream systems as possible.

4. Systems Retirements
A number of servers and systems were retired completely. These included legacy servers related to Coda which has been replaced by Oracle Financials. There was some further facilitation work conducted with the Financial Services Division in respect of migration to a new file server.

5. Ongoing work
In order to bring this project to a final conclusion, the following systems continue to be worked on:

• Library Manuscript system (CALM)
• School of Nursing Attendance Service
• Interfaces to SITS
• Extra Mural course server
• Staff and student ID card interfaces
This was complex project and required extensive coordination both within IT Services ad also in many cases, extensive liaison with systems owners across Trinity. We thank everyone who enabled this project to succeed.

Release of Windows 10 – support statement

Windows 10 is being released by Microsoft on July 29th 2015 and IS Services are preparing to test this operating system in regard to its compatibility with the Trinity data network and IT systems.  For this reason Windows 10 is not currently supported by IS Services for use on the Trinity data network, either in offices and labs or on the TCDconnect service.

For those with personally-owned computers, Microsoft are allowing one year from the release date for people who are running certain versions of Windows to take advantage of their free Windows 10 upgrade offer.  Our recommendation is not to upgrade to Windows 10 for the present time.

IS Services will provide status updates our Windows support statement web page regarding the progress of our testing with Windows 10, and we will also publish details to this blog.
